<International Circulation>: You have investigated the role of blood pressure on renal damage. What is the influence of high blood pressure on the development of end-stage renal disease in those with non-diabetic, chronic renal failure?
<International Circulation>: You will step into a new role of President of the ESH. How do you see the ESH moving forward? Are there new co-operations, European initiatives or new things on the horizon?
Prof.Redon: From its beginnings, the Society has grown over the years and consolidated but at the same time, I think the Society today is very well grounded in aspects of educational activities and occasions like this big meeting continue to prove to be very good. In terms of professional activities, we have established a program of a network of Centers of Excellence across Europe and even outside of Europe. We also provide an accreditation program for hypertension specialists even though it is not a specialty accepted by all countries, it provides a diploma of expertise in hypertension. At the same time, we are also supporting a lot of research. We have fellowships and each year we have two Fellows that are selected to work in the Centers of Excellence. We provide financial support for more than 400 young people here who come to present their research. These are things that are very important. My first commitment is to try to maintain these and, if it is possible, to improve on them. But we also have another element to the Society that is coming and I think will be very important. First of all, to push the working groups of the Society (and we have thirteen working groups now, some of them really very active) to be the engines of the Society for the future – giving ideas, adding research and actively participating in the process. Another important feature we are starting now is called an Affiliation and Association Program. We have a very good relationship with the other societies across Europe, but the idea is to establish more direct links so that we may more benefit more others and to further spread and consolidate the Society. In the same way, we have a lot of requests from Central America, North Africa, South America and other countries to assist with educational activities and the hope is that these direct links will help form relationships with these non-European countries in an Association Program. This is one topic I will be presenting at this meeting to the Presidents of the International Societies meeting. Of course, there are many other things. Another thing that I think is very interesting for the Society is to spread more widely what our activities are and to be more visible in the lay press and lay forums so that we might spread our message about hypertension and cardiovascular protection in general. As you will be aware, the title of the meeting changed to reflect this. We introduced cardiovascular protection because hypertension is not alone in this business as it is linked with diabetes, dyslipidemia and so on.
Affiliation and Associatio
